Spring Break 1999

Sean Barnes, Ryan Griffin, Justin Kirk, and Brock Collins were in Brock's backyard with nothing to do.  They began hitting a NERF football with a baseball bat, and started to play with the rules of softball.  Not having enough people for a first basemen, and not wanting to play "pitcher's hand", they decided to incorporate the power lines that hang through the yard into the game.  The rest is history.

Right-  A picture of the wires, the top wire is approximately 12' high and the bottom wire is approximately 7' high.  Foftball historians will remember that the 7' wire was added to the field after Brock got cable TV, previously the middle wires were the bottom.

History

The first ever Foftball game was won by Sean Barnes and Brock Collins on an  11-run homer by Barnes in the bottom of the 7th, (11-run homers were immediately changed to 3-run homers because 11 runs changed the game too much).  Foftball was not an instant craze, in the beginning a select few people had even heard of it, let alone played it.

Buzz about the game has grown slowly over the years since then, there was an attempt to create a league that fell through due to lack of player committment.  By the summer of 2003 approximately 20 Foftball games had been played.

Then, in the summer of 2004, with no football camp, and a lot of extra time, we all started to play.  It was addictive, and the Foftball craze was in full force.  Over three days in the summer, (Which have come to be known as the days of Blood, Sweat, and Feces) we built 3-rows of bleachers, a scoreboard, and a carpeted bench for the players.  With so much interest in the game, it was common to have 5 games a week.  Approximately 40 games were played summer 2004 alone.

Foftball games are played in all types of weather.  There have been several rain games, and three snow games, two of them known as the "Mud Jundos" because of the unbelievably muddy conditions.

The highest scoring game in Foftball history was won by the Owls 81-77 on October 24, 2004 on an early Sunday morning.  The game broke the previous single team scoring record of 79, and the combined team scoring record (158) of 141 was smashed.

The lowest scoring game in Foftball history was during the dead-ball era (the time when NERF footballs were exclusively used).  The final score was 14-7.  Since then,  the lowest combined score is 26-21, set on December 23, 2004, on a cold cold day, and the players were forced to use a NERF ball because no COOP balls could be found.

The largest comeback in foftball history was set this summer when a team came back from a deficit that was 31 runs at times.  The largest 1-inning comeback was also set this summer when a team came back from a 19 run deficit in the top of the 7th to win by 8.

The Rules of Foftball

-Foftball is preferably played 5 on 5, but at least must be a 4 on 4 game.  The maximum amount of players in the field is 6, but a team can have extra hitters.  Players can be put in any position they want.

-When a player hits the ball he must reach first base before the opposing team throws the ball through the wires.  After first base, all softball rules apply except that pegging is allowed.

-If a player hits a ball through the wires, it is a 3 run homer, if the bases are loaded, it is 6 runs (it's like adding 2 to the score).  "3 runners" can be robbed if a player catches the ball before it hits the ground, unless it hits the roof.

-It is 3 runs if:  A. The ball goes through on a fly and hits the garage or roof.  B. The ball goes through on a fly and hits the ground.  C.  The ball hits the roof and rolls back through the wires.  D. The ball hits the side of the garage and bounces up through the wires.  E. The ball hits a player on a fly and he inadvertantly knocks it through the wires.

-When a player hits a 3-runner, he must round the bases 3 times, unless in a "speed up" game, when he must jump on the plate 3 times.

-Any hit that hits the roof or the side of the garage must be played and cannot be caught for an out.  Any hit into the trees can be caught for an out.

-Any hit that hits the roof and rolls off the side into foul territory is foul unless it passed through the wires.

-The pitcher can throw the ball any way he wants as long as it is not considered "whipping the ball", which is determined by the batter.  The pitcher is allowed 1 step out of the pitcher's circle.  There are no Balks, so the pitcher can fake home and pick someone off.

-There is no stealing, but a player may take a few steps off of the base once the pitch has been thrown.

-There is no "out of play", so players may advance as many bases as they want on an overthrown ball or missed peg attempt.

-If a ball is hit into the basketball hoop it is worth 10 runs. A ball can bounce up off of the ground and into the hoop.

-If a ball is hit through the wires and into the hoop, the game is over, and that team wins.

-The hitting team must supply the catcher.

-For safety purposes, when rounding the bases, the runner does not need to physically touch the trees, but must be in the immediate area.  On force plays and peg plays, they must be touching the base.

-If a ball sticks on the roof, it is a ground rule double.  If a ball sticks in the trees it is a ground rule single.

-Any object can be used to hit a foftball.  But the most effective is a softball or baseball bat.

-If the ball is hit off of the base and bounces foul, it is a fair ball.

-If the ball hits the side of the garage and bounces foul it is fair.

-If the ball hits the trees and bounces foul, it is a foul ball.

-If the ball is hit and lands on top of the plate it is a foul ball, if the ball is leaning on the plate in fair territory, it is a fair ball.

-There is 1 bunt per inning per team.

-Trash Talking is encouraged.

-There is no "Slaughter Rule", because almost no lead is insurmountable.
